Black Knife: Which Difficulty Should You Practice?

Open the Black Knife player · All guides

The seven numbered choices in Bad_Time_Trio1's Black Knife build are not seven different bosses. The first three choose a Shadow Mantle recipient; the remaining options remove that protection or add a challenge condition. Choosing a higher number before learning the controls can make a practice session shorter without teaching you more. Start by deciding what you want the attempt to test: reading an attack, keeping the party functional, or surviving under a specific restriction.

What we checked

On 22 October 2026 we inspected the project archive served by this site's CDN, selected all seven opening options in Chromium and entered their opening battle screens. We also played the opening attack in three starts using the first three Mantle choices. These are opening checks, not seven completed runs. We did not establish clear rates, average attempts or a mathematically best recipient. Later attack advice from the original game is not automatically proof about this remake.

Black Knife's real opening screen lists seven numbered Shadow Mantle and challenge choices.
The actual hosted opening menu. Read the words after Nobody: options 5 and 6 add different restrictions.

The seven choices, without a false difficulty ranking

  1. 1 — Kris: assign the Mantle to Kris. Use this as a consistent baseline if you want to compare changes in your movement across attempts.
  2. 2 — Susie: assign the Mantle to Susie. Change only this choice when you want to examine party survival, rather than changing your entire command plan at once.
  3. 3 — Ralsei: assign the Mantle to Ralsei. This is another recipient choice, not a new set of keyboard controls.
  4. 4 — Nobody: remove the recipient advantage without selecting the extra condition displayed on the following options.
  5. 5 — Nobody + 1.5X Damage: the opening labels this as an additional damage challenge. The label is not our measurement of every attack's final rounded damage.
  6. 6 — Nobody + No Heal: select a recovery restriction. Do not plan a learning route around healing that this mode is designed to remove.
  7. 7 — No Hit: select the explicit no-hit challenge. Use it for a narrow consistency test, not as the default way to discover an unfamiliar attack.

After the number, the game displays a confirmation and asks for Z to continue. Check that message before proceeding. A wrong opening choice is easier to correct before you invest time in an attempt. Our source inspection found distinct no-heal and no-hit state branches; merely seeing their menu labels does not prove every late-game interaction has been tested.

Separate controls from difficulty

Use arrows or WASD for movement, Z or Enter for confirmation, X for cancel or slower movement, and C to hurry text in this build. A number selects the opening option; it is not your general attack button. The game still needs keyboard input, even though the canvas can fit on a phone. On a narrow screen our player starts collapsed so the written guide remains useful without pretending to supply a touch pad.

At the party menu, give each character an action and read the next prompt rather than pressing a long stream of confirmations. In our opening checks, repeated Z presses were sufficient to reach an enemy attack, but that is not a recommended damage route: it gives poor control over timing and makes it harder to notice which party member you are commanding. Practice a deliberate menu pass before optimizing it.

Mode 1 opening: the party command screen is a separate step from dodging. Do not confuse a loaded game with an active attack.

Read the opening field, not the character art

The first attack we reached placed diamond-shaped objects around a small central box. The Knight and the party occupy much more screen area than the heart, but the local gap around that heart deserves your attention. Start with room to move and make one correction toward open space. A wide sweep feels decisive but can put you against the opposite boundary before you have read the next object.

For a first exercise, keep the same mode and command choices for three observations of that opening. On one, concentrate on noticing the first incoming object. On the next, shorten the initial movement. On the third, use X only when the local gap calls for finer control. This compares a habit rather than three unrelated strategies. We have not measured an exact slow-speed multiplier or a guaranteed safe coordinate.

Second practice start, with Susie selected for the Mantle. This capture demonstrates a reached opening pattern, not a no-hit clear.

Progress from learning to a challenge condition

Stay with one recipient until you can explain an avoidable miss. Then change either the recipient or the challenge rule, not both your mode and your movement plan. Nobody is a useful comparison if you already recognize the opening. No Heal asks a different question: whether your survival plan works without recovery. No Hit asks whether you can reproduce a clean section at all. These are practice goals, not mandatory milestones or a claim that each number is strictly harder than the one before it.

Keep a useful retry record

Record the date, menu choice, last pattern reached, the input you intended and the reason you restarted. A note such as “mode 2, opening diamonds, held right too long” is actionable. “Impossible” is not. If the frame ignored input, report it as a focus or loading problem rather than counting it as a combat failure. See browser controls help for that distinction.

This guide concerns the hosted Bad_Time_Trio1 project. Gangstermango's Roaring Knight build has its own opening and slow key; do not carry every instruction across simply because both fights feature the Knight.
